top50stl person of the week – Enos Stanley Kroenke

Enos Stanley Kroenke is certainly the man of the moment in St. Louis right now. He’s a very popular topic, albeit not a popular person. Stan has blossomed into quite the villain in Saint Louis for his recent disparagement of the city as he makes the case to bolt for his preferred destination in Los Angeles. I’ve been a Rams fan since they arrived back in 1995. My company has had season tickets since that time and I have personally attended many games, some during good times and unfortunately many more during the bad times and Mr. Kroenke has done a very poor job of keeping us all in the loop about his intentions (and by “us” I mean the fans and citizens that have supported his team for 20 years). He made his opinion about St. Louis pretty clear with his recent comments.

Now, I could list the myriad of reasons why Mr. Kroenke is a scoundrel, but that’s not what this site is about. I’d like to focus on the positive. First, in a delightful twist, twitter erupted under the hash tag #kroenkecomplaints with fans listing tongue in cheek hardships ole Stanley must be facing in the STL. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Gooey butter cake is richer than him
  • No place for yacht on River Des Peres
  • The Hill really isn’t a hill
  • Becky Queen of Carpets isn’t a real queen
  • Can’t get the Wehrenberg song out of my head

The humor demonstrates to me how clever our fellow citizens can be and that we don’t take ourselves too seriously. It shows that we know exactly what makes us unique, quirky and special (and many of the jabs can really only be understood if you are a Saint Louisan).

If anything, I think Kroenke’s quest to move the team has shined a light on what makes us special, but also where we need to improve. I think we need to seize this moment as an opportunity, a challenge to ignite our economy, attract people and businesses and show the world how great Saint Louis is (I think this is the city’s current slogan so another challenge I’d like to issue is a new slogan).

Los Angeles is a very different place than Saint Louis, but it might just be better suited for guys like Stan Kroenke, and as far as I’m concerned, they can have him. Stan Kroenke is trying to make the case that St. Louis isn’t good enough for the Rams. I’ll tell you one thing I know for sure, Stan Kroenke isn’t good enough for St. Louis.
