top50stl person of the week: Gov. Bob Holden
I had the pleasure of sitting down for a cup of coffee a few weeks ago with former MO Governor Bob Holden. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but I was a little intimidated to sit down with someone who had achieved such a high office. I’m not really sure why because politicians are just regular people too. It didn’t help that when I walked in to meet him (at a Bread Co, mind you) he was seated at a table speaking to Senator Roy Blunt who was in town to announce his reelection campaign. He was gracious enough to introduce me. So, there I was just chatting with a Governor and a Senator.
I have to say, the conversation Gov. Holden and I had was very nice. He is a kind man, very interested in making our region a special place. Through top50stl I am doing my part to highlight the positives of Saint Louis while Gov. Holden is on a mission to highlight the positives of the Midwest, specifically to achieve a stronger partnership with China. He currently serves as the Chairman of an organization known as the Midwest US-China Association while also serving as a visiting professor and the Founder of the Holden Public Policy Forum at Webster University.
Gov. Holden is well-versed on economic development and public policy initiatives in the MidWest and he can easily rattle off statistics about the region that makes it a very attractive place to do business. The dozen states that make up the Midwest region (IL, IN, IA, KS, MI, MN, MO, NE, ND, OH, SD, WI) constitute the fifth largest economy in the world when combined. They hold tremendous resources, world-class schools and of course, midwestern hospitality and charm. By the time we finished our meeting, I was encouraged by what the Midwest has to offer and motivated to help spread the word. Please take a look at the MidWest US-China Association website for additional information.
