top50stl restaurant of the week: Southern

My wife and I finally had the opportunity to try Southern which is another great establishment brought about by the same group behind Pappy’s, Bogart’s and several other tremendous restaurants. Southern is located in the same building as Pappy’s so I was already familiar with the location having been to Pappy’s many times. It took a moment to get used to the menu and I had a few questions about various offerings, but we settled on sharing fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, mashed potatoes and hoppin john (which is an item I had to find out about……it’s basically a dirty rice and beans). We decided not to order the fried chicken not too hot because our cashier explained that it is “kind of like biting into a habanero pepper.”

Everything was delicious! The tomatoes were fresh, the potatoes were chunky and the hoppin john was a delectable mixture of tastes. The chicken was the perfect level of hot and the spices were so good. Seriously, my mouth is watering while I type this! I took a quick trip back to the cashier to grab a salted caramel brownie for dessert. It was very rich and tasted a lot like fudge. 

Just like Pappy’s, the ambience was warm, inviting and the people were all gracious. I’m already looking forward to my next visit.
